Colum Graham

Greetings!

I received my doctorate from the Australian National University in March 2024 and began a postdoctoral position in the Food Politics and Society Cluster at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore the following July. My work contributes to understanding the effects of structural change—or lack thereof—on small-scale farmers and their contexts. Much of my scholarship focuses on Indonesia, but I have also pursued research elsewhere in Southeast Asia.

I have taken an interdisciplinary approach to ‘development’ by linking debates in political science with those in anthropology, economics, history and sociology. More generally, I am interested in forming new ways of interpreting the rural world and supporting small-scale farmers as they negotiate with states and their colonial legacies, brokers in value chains, poisoned ecologies, and the challenges of automation and climate change.
